Wolff Preparing to Divest Shareholding Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
