Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
