The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
