The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Music Generations

It has been 20 years since the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, but try telling that someone who has mastered Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display in time with a song. Each riff mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series which made a significant influence on numerous musicians included, showcasing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the cost was so high,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for exposing their children to the music they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist remembers how the series brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Typically such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased in the US, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the band during their US tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly earned the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold more than half a million copies in its first week, and sales of their songs saw an increase significantly at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone performed at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously wrapped up a successful tour before their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals died down, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the community alive, with set to be a new product from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist with new generations.”
