Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
