Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
