A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
